The BACnet interface links many systems supporting the BACnet standard to the North eXtensible Object Model (XOM).
BACnet, a data communication protocol for Building Automation and Control Networks, is an American national standard (ASHRAE 135), a European pre-standard (prEN), and an ISO global standard (ISO 16484-5).
The BACnet standard can operate on several different link layers, including: Ethernet, ARCNET, IP, RS485 (MS/TP), RS232 (Point-to-Point), LonTalk, etc.
The North BACnet interfaces can support BACnet Point-to-Point (RS232) and BACnet/IP. Support for other link layers, including MS/TP (RS485) devices, is also possible by using a BACnet router.
Three versions of the BACnet interface are available:
The BACnet/IP client/server interface, available on the ObSys platform, supports the reading and writing of objects from other BACnet devices. It also supports other BACnet client devices reading and writing its objects. The interface supports the analog, binary, and multi-state standard object types.
The BACnet/IP server interface, available on the Commander platform, supports other BACnet client devices reading and writing its objects. The interface supports the analog value and binary value standard object types.
The BACnet Point-to-Point client interface, available on the ObSys and Compass platforms, supports the reading and writing of objects from other BACnet devices. The interface can read and write the analog and binary standard object types, which the other BACnet device should support.
For further information on these interfaces, and a copy of the BACnet PIC statement, refer to the e-Library.
A sample of systems supporting the BACnet standard, include:
Trane Tracer Summit chiller controls via the Trane BCU
Automated Logic control range
Alerton LSI controllers via a BACnet point-to-point router
Delta Controls DCU
Siemens Desigo PX range of controls - connect via a Desigo PXC??-T
York CX range of BACnet controlers
Johnson Controls Network Automation Engine (NAE) controls
Trend Control Systems Web IQ3 controllers/TOPS.
The BACnet interface is available on the following North platforms:
| CP/BACNET/232 | Compass Point with BACnet Point-to-point interface |
| CMDR/ | BACnet/IP is available with all Commander interfaces |
| OSM/BACNET | BACnet Point-to-Point OSM available with all ObSys editions |
| OSM/BACNETIP | BACnet/IP OSM available with all ObSys editions |
| MISC/BACNETROUTER | BACnet router compatible with BACnet/IP, Point-to-Point, Ethernet and MS/TP networks. |
| MISC/BACIP/MSTP | BACnet router compatible with BACnet/IP and MS/TP devices only. |
