Licence units explained

To help you understand the theory and practice of licence units within ObSys 2.0, we have compiled this guide.

What are licence units?

Licence units are the currency of ObSys. Each edition of ObSys has a number of licence units available to enable components within the ObSys suite. To connect to a third-party system, use ObSys enhancement applications and the ObServer core itself will all use a certain number of licence units. The more that you wish to do at any one time, the more licence units you will need.

Do licence units limit how many data points are available?

Licence units are used to enable an entire module, such as an application or connection to a third-party system. None of our interfaces limit the number of data points available based on licence units.

When are licence units used?

ObSys uses licence units in the following way:

  • The ObServer core and its built-in modules, such as WebView, alarm handling, process control, etc. require 250 units.
  • ObServer enhancement modules, which include ObView, data manager, alarm manager, password manager and the ObSys link API; all together these require 250 units.
  • Each additional third-party system interface (OSM) also requires 250 units.
  • Some interface modules, such as links to Compass, Zip and Commander systems use no licence units. Some modules that do not connect to a third-party system also use a lower number of licence units.

How many licence units are available?

ObSys is available in several editions, each having a pre-determined number of licence units that can be allocated by the user. The licence device (dongle) that comes with a copy of ObSys will determine the total number of licence units available.

ObSys is available in the following editions:

  • Engineer's edition - 500 licence units.
This edition provides enough licence units to engineer the North product range, including Compass, Commander and Zip.
  • Client edition - 750 licence units.
Typically used for solutions connecting to Compass, Commander or an ObSys Server for third-party connections; also suitable for ObSys supervisor solutions connecting to one third-party system.
  • Standard edition - 1000 licence units.
Typically used to provide an ObSys supervisor with WebView, ObServer enhancements, and connecting with up to two third-party systems.
  • Server edition - 1500 licence units.
Typically installed on server applications. In addition to WebView and ObServer enhancement modules this edition will also provide connections for up to four third-party systems.

ObSys editions may be also upgraded on-site with additional licence units.
