The RoHS Directive (2002/95/EC) works in conjunction with the WEEE Directive, and sets a legal restriction on the use of certain hazardous substances (RoHS) in end-user EEE. The directive sets maximum acceptable levels of 6 substances within the composition of the product – lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium and the two brominated flame retardants, PBB & PBDE.
The RoHS Directive applies to 8 of the 10 product categories defined by the WEEE Directive. It does not apply to monitoring and control equipment or medical devices.
This legislation came into force on July 1, 2006.
All of North's products are potentially effected by the RoHS Directive.
Individually, as a sub-assembly, they are not considered end-user products and are therefore outside the scope of RoHS. However, our products are used to produce an end-user product which may need to comply with RoHS.
The primary function of our products is to form part of an integrated building management or control system. If our products are used for this purpose, they are classified by the WEEE Directive as monitoring and control equipment and are therefore exempt from the requirements of the RoHS Directive.
If you intend to use our products for another purpose, they may not be exempt from the directive. To assist those customers we will shortly be publishing the RoHS status of our products.
North are committed to working in an environmentally responsible manner and are implementing product changes to comply with the RoHS Directive. The main issue facing the electronics industry is the use of lead in the manufacture of components and circuit board assemblies. North are actively investigating lead-free alternatives, whilst maintaining the high reliability of our products.
